Tom Blake

stairs into a stream

Princess Chambers Basement (entry via Leake St)
2-24 Nov | Thur-Sun | 10am-4pm

Situated in a flooded basement below the entrance to the Princess Theatre (a cinema operating up until the late 1960's), 'stairs into a stream' is a meditative response to the cinematic past of the building and the natural occurrence of water within this subterranean space. Set to the sound of footsteps on the timber floorboards above, 'stairs into a stream (silver coins)' see lights refracted onto a screen as the audience steps into the water.

Tom Blake's solo and collaborative practice draws on fragmented moments, looped imagery and recurring motifs as potential sites for contemplating the psychological, architectural and technological frameworks that surround us. Tom has exhibited in Australia, Japan and Italy and has been a finalist in the Fisher's Ghost Art Award, the FAC Print Award and The Blake Prize. Tom has previously undertaken residencies with the Museo de Arte Moderno (MAM) ChiloƩ, Fremantle Arts Centre, PICA, North Metro TAFE, Tenjinyama Art Studios and is currently a studio artist at Parramatta Artists Studios. Tom is also part of momo doto, an ongoing collaboration with Brisbane-based artist Dominique Chen.
